A Song of Deliverance

The more you look for God’s provision in your life, the more you will see it.

2 Samuel chapter 22 is called “David’s Song of Deliverance.” In it, the elderly King David recounted how God had delivered him from so many trials, dangers and sins – and David had quite a wild life to praise God for! Many of us have not led such an exciting life as David did. But when we really meditate upon it, we can think of more and more ways that God has saved, protected and cared for us.

Here is my own Song of Deliverance. It’s not nearly as beautifully written as David’s, but it is an encouragement to myself and to my readers to always remember God’s provision in our lives:

The LORD is my rock, my fortress, my deliverer;
I call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised,
And I am saved from my enemies.
When the snares of death confronted me,
You did not allow them to entangle me.
Even when I denied You the honor You were due,
You loved me and protected me.
You laid Your hand upon my head;
You called me by my name.
Because I was precious in Your eyes, and honored,
And You loved me,
You said, “I am here – I have always been here.”

Nearly eight years have passed, and I have failed You,
But never have You failed me.
When I engaged in sin, You drew me out of darkness.
When I lost sight of the path,
You left Your footprints before me in the grass.
You gave wings to my feet, locks to my doors,
And dreams to my mind – thus, You saved me from danger.
You comforted me in my anxious nights.
You forgave and forgave and forgave
And forgave.
I was astonished by the strength of Your love for me.

Now You have blessed me with a husband
Who reflects Your affection for me.
You have granted me a job that I like;
You have given me a home that I love.
Still You forgive and forgive
And forgive.
You have given me the shield of salvation,
And Your gentleness makes me humble.
Make me malleable, as clay under Your hand.
Lead me on up Your Highway of Holiness,
And keep me faithful ’til I see Your face.
“The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious,
Slow to anger,
And abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness!”
